On Friday January 8th, The Togolese national team came under fire from Angolan rebels as their team bus was ambushed in the city of Cabinda.
Two members of the Togolese delegation-the team's media officer and an assistant coach as well as the bus driver were killed in the incident and reserve goalkeeper Kodjovi Obilale was rushed to South Africa for medical treatment.
In the aftermath of the incident, the team were withdrawn from the tournament at the request of Togo prime minister Gilbert Houngbo.
The FLEC rebel group released a statement afterwards stating the Togolese team weren't their intended targets but words are meaningless at this point. Two members of FLEC have been arrested for their part in the incident.
