Huck defeats Afolabi to retain WBO cruiserweight title

German Marco Huck (27-1 20KOs) kept his WBO cruiserweight title with a close unanimous decision victory over interim champion, England born-Nigerian Ola Afolabi (14-2-3, 6KOs) in a toe-to-toe battle on Saturday night in Germany.

Afolabi tried to control the fight with a steady jab and staggered the champion with a combination in the fifth round.

However, Huck recovered and outworked the challenger, who has often been accused of fighting lazily. Afolabi suffered his first defeat since 2003. The score totals were 115-113 twice and 116-112 for the champion.

King Mo Wins Strikeforce Debut

American born Nigerian Muhammed ‘King Mo’ Lawal (6-0) earned the biggest win of his budding MMA career by overwhelming veteran Mike Whitehead (24-7) via first-round TKO at Strikeforce Evolution in San Jose, California.

Giving up nearly 50 pounds and cage experience to Whitehead who was victorious in fifteen of his last sixteen fights, Lawal showed star potential in his tantalizing performance and domination of Whitehead.

The fight began as a tactical boxing match for the opening minutes when Lawal struck Whitehead with a vicious right hand sending his opponent to the canvas, Lawal pounced on the dazed Whitehead and continued to land unanswered punching forcing the referee to stop the contest.

Lawal gained notoriety fighting in the Japanese MMA promotion World Victory Road, this bout was his Strikeforce debut and his sensational performance and star potential will undoubtedly set him up for a big 2010.

Zaveck Shocks Hlatshwayo

Relatively unknown welterweight Jan Zaveck (28-1, 16KOs) stunned the crown at the Wembley Indoor Arena in Johannesburg, South Africa by dominating and eventually knocking out South African native Isaac Hlatshwayo (29-2, 10KOs) to win the IBF welterweight title.

Zaveck scored one knockdown in the second and two in third round; Hlatshwayo had no answer, forcing the referee to step in and stop the fight.

This bout was the first title defense for Hlatshwayo who earned the vacant crown by split-decision victory over Delvin Rodriguez in August.

Sam Peter Stops Gabe Brown in Four Rounds

Former WBC heavyweight champion Sam Peter (33-3, 26 KOs) of Nigeria now fight out of Las Vegas, NV continued on the comeback trail by stopping Gabe Brown (18-13-4, 9KOs) who weighed in at an astonishing 363 pounds, in the 4th round in Youngstown, Ohio .

This was Peter’s third straight victory fighting under Top Rank promotions all by early knockout.

After the fight Peter declared that he was ready for a title shot, preferring a rematch with either Klitschko brother, who both hold victories over Peter.

Nigeria hires Lars Lagerback to be new Coach

After finally clipping the wings off of Super Eagles Coach Shuaibu Amodu, the NFF have decided to hire former Swedish Manager Lars Lagerback to take over the team and lead them to South Africa. Lagerback will be assisted by former Eagles player and manager Austin Eguavoen as well as former Eagles goalkeeper Alloy Agu and legendary striker Daniel Amokachi.

Togo ANC ambush/ exit from ANC

On Friday January 8th, The Togolese national team came under fire from Angolan rebels as their team bus was ambushed in the city of Cabinda.
Two members of the Togolese delegation-the team's media officer and an assistant coach as well as the bus driver were killed in the incident and reserve goalkeeper Kodjovi Obilale was rushed to South Africa for medical treatment.
In the aftermath of the incident, the team were withdrawn from the tournament at the request of Togo prime minister Gilbert Houngbo.
The FLEC rebel group released a statement afterwards stating the Togolese team weren't their intended targets but words are meaningless at this point. Two members of FLEC have been arrested for their part in the incident.

Camerooonian Suh in contention for Heisman trophy

University of Nebraska defensive lineman Ndamukong Suh is in the running for the Heisman trophy which will be presented to the player voted the best in college Football this season. Suh is the son of Cameroonian and Jamaican parents and is a senior at Nebraska. The Oregon native will be up against Florida QB Tim Tebow, Texas QB Colt McCoy and RB's Mark Ingram of Alabama and Toby Gerhart of Stanford.
If Suh pulls off the victory, he'd become the first defensive player since CB Charles Woodson of Michigan to win and the first defensive lineman to ever win.

Heartbreak in Quebec City for Funeka

In what seems to be a reoccurring theme in boxing, South Africa’s Ali Funeka (30-2-3, 25 KO's) was at the wrong end of a horrendous decision after his title fight IBF lightweight for the vacant IBF crown, against Joan Guzman (29-0-1, 17 KO’s) of the Dominican Republic who was rendered a majority draw. The unusually tall lightweight Funeka used a solid jab and a thunderous right hand to control the fight beginning in the third round, leaving Guzman’s face bloodied and bruised.
The live audience in Quebec City voiced their displeasure as the scores were read. This was Funeka’s second shot at a title; in his last outing he dropped a close decision to former lightweight champion Nate Campbell. The scores were 116-112 for Funeka and 114-114, 114-114; the title which should belong to Funeka will remain vacant.
Boxing promoter Lou DiBella who has no financial interest in either fighter called it one of the five worst decisions he has ever seen.

King Kong Dethroned

Ghanaian born Joseph Agbeko (27-2, 22 KOs) lost his IBF bantamweight title to Yonnhy Perez (20-0, 14 KOs) of Colombia on Saturday night at Treasure Island Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas via unanimous decision. In what will undoubtedly be considered one of the fights of the year, Agbeko and Perez stood toe to toe and fought at a rigid pace from the opening bell. In the tenth round Agbeko was dazed by an accidental head butt, unseen by referee Robert Byrd who ruled it a knock down after the staggered Agbeko went to the ground after a punch from Perez. The judges scored the fight surprisingly wide 117-110 twice and 116-111 for the challenger. Agbeko was very upset after the fight, feeling he deserved the decision and complained about the referee decision to award Perez a knockdown. The Ghanaian demanded a rematch from the new champion.
